Mixing it up..

December 9th, 2009

When it comes to exterior Christmas decorations, normally Mr. vB and I stick to the basic wreath on the door and white candles in the windows.  This year, however, Mr, vB has decided to mix it up.  This is what I found when I got home from work today.

lights9 boxes of LED rope lights on the counter and 6 more boxes on the floor.

When I asked what exactly we were going to do with all these lights, Mr. vB let me in on his little plan.

Here is the exterior of our house before..

DSC_0026

And After 15 boxes of LED lights…

DSC_0040

The inspiration came from houses we saw on Monument Ave with similar rope lights spilling over the balconies.

Kinda funky.. kinda fun!

It’s making me rethink my wreath though! I might need to do something a little less traditional than the ornaments that are on my current wreath.  I saw in a magazine yesterday the idea of spray painting a wreath.  Wouldn’t a bright red wreath be cool, or maybe a lime green wreath??

I did also replace my Confederate Jasmine with the cutest little fir tree ever.

DSC_0044Guess I gotta get some funky decorations for this guy too!

I see a busy weekend in my future! Stay Tuned!!

Hamburger Helper…

November 23rd, 2009

I picked up the November issue of Richmond Magazine purely because of the front cover and tag line.

best burgersI luv, luv, luv a good hamburger!  Currently my favorite burger is from Five Guys Burger and Fries. Ever been there?  It’s amazing!  I don’t know which I like better, the juicy burger or the fresh fries.

But after reading the article about the Best Burger in Richmond, I am up to the challenge of testing out the competition.

I have enlisted Mr. vB and our good friends, Amanda and Dave Monger, to help with this challenge.  Our plan is to rate the burgers the same way that Richmond Magazine did.  We will rate the patty, the bun, the vegetable toppings, and other toppings on a scale from 1-5.  {5 being the best.}

Here are the contenders: Cafe Gutenberg, Honey Whyte’s, Racine, Delux, The Hill Cafe, Davis and Main, Dot’s Back Inn, River City Diner, Can Can Brasserie, Tarrant’s Cafe and The Belvidere at Broad.

Once we have tested every last burger we will crown the 1st Annual BBURP.  {Best Burger Upon Richmond Prize)

Will my {5} guys be able to hold that sacred place in my heart?  Stay Tuned to find out…

Bobble-Head Lamps…

November 10th, 2009

Remember the poor lamps that Mr. vB destroyed broke during the “paneling project” in the master bedroom”?

DSC_0322

Well they’re about to get a second chance on life.

I hit up Home Depot today and found a replacement socket to fix the bobble-head look.

DSC_0361

And after conning Mr. vB into helping me, we got it fixed in no time! Boots wanted to be involved too.

DSC_0371

DSC_0374

But besides fixing the socket, I am also thinking of maybe painting the base a new color.  I’ve been itching to use a peacock blue color somewhere in my house and this may be a good fit.  I also picked up a fun golden velvet lampshade at Ikea this weekend that I think will really pop with the blue.

DSC_0385

(have no fear-the shade is shiny because I left the plastic cover on it in-case I need to return it!)

Now I just have to talk Mr. vB into showing me how to use the paint gun on the air compressor.  I figure that will be the easiest way to paint the lamp so you won’t see any brushstrokes!  I am hoping to get to that tomorrow night. I will keep you posted!

The entire resort was wrapped around a crescent shaped beach.

Our days consisted of floating in the clear blue water…

and then doing them both simultaneously.

We also fit in some time at the spa,

some time in the pool…

PA180259

and some time getting dressed up to go eat!

PA190288

We also made some dear friends that celebrate the same Wedding Anniversary as we do!

PA200310

{We made a deal with Jenn and Bob that we would all return to LDB for our 5 year anniversary!  How awesome is that?!}

Our last night on the resort we were treated to dinner on the beach.

By the time we had dinner it was so dark that our waiter scared us every time he came to our table!

Mr.vB, Mrs.vB, Wedding/Anniversary

October 13th, 2007

October 13th, 2009

It’s hard to believe it’s been 2 years since Mr. vB and I tied the knot!  It seems just like yesterday!  Here’s a walk down memory lane.

(I apologize in advance for the grainy photos.  I spent longer than I would like to admit scanning them onto my computer.  We had a great photographer, Sarah Hazelgrove, but at the time she did not upload her digital photos.  We only have paper copies.)

getingdressedIt was the year of the white track suit- what can I say?  At least mine had my cool new initials on it!

flagHere is the vB Family Crest which was a key part in many aspects of our celebration.  We had these custom flags made, as well as used it on our invitations, and Guest Welcome Boxes.

This is my FAVORITE photo that Sarah took!  It was as we were leaving the Church and headed to the Reception!

Our Reception was held at The Main Street Train Station in Downtown Richmond.

Scan-091012-0014Mr.vB surprised me with these awesome Custom made Converse.  He had them made in our wedding colors and I loved the “Just Married” tag-line.

Our First dance was to Paul Simon’s Late in the Evening.  We took dance lessons as we really wanted to wow the crowd!

Apparently we didn’t warn the photographer that we were going to do the DEATH DROP at the end of our number.

We had also planned for the wedding party to grab the fake instruments that we had laid out by the dance floor and start dancing around at the end of our First Dance.  If you have ever heard Late in the Evening, you know how perfect it was!

The Tides Inn

October 11th, 2009

Mr. vB and I snuck away this weekend for an early Anniversary Celebration.  Have you guys ever been to Irvington, VA?  No offense to it, but if you blink too long you might miss it.  Surprisingly nestled right on one of its many creeks is a 5 Star Resort called THE TIDES INN. It was a very quick visit, but W-O-W! From start to finish it was amazing!

DSC_0311DSC_0313

When we checked in, the front desk clerk told us that we had a note waiting for us.

DSC_0272(nice spelling of our last name, eh? )

We also found out that we had been upgraded to a suite overlooking the creek.

DSC_0366And we were in Room 213 nonetheless. (2=2nd Anniversary, 13= day we got married)

When we opened the door we were greeted with…

Once we got over the shock of our amazing digs, we decided to venture out.

DSC_0270

Before long it was time to head back! Cocktail hour was calling our name!

DSC_0321So the way dinner worked was that we had a server come up from the restaurant and take our order for each course of dinner.  We started with some cocktails and appetizers.

DSC_0340Then we each had a yummy salad.

DSC_0345The entrees were fabulous! I had the crab-cakes and Mr. vB had the Filet.

DSC_0350

We ended the meal with a brownie sundae topped with whip cream! YUMMO!  It didn’t last long enough for any photos- Sorry!

It was such a nice treat being able to eat in the room vs. the restaurant.  Mr. vB and I loved watching the sun set and the boats coming in and out of the marina.

DSC_0356

Many thanks to my Mums and Daddio for the special treat! It was such a great surprise!  And many thanks to the Tides Inn for making our anniversary getaway so memorable!

100% Cotton

October 9th, 2009

Do any of you guys follow the rules when it comes to Anniversary gifts?  And what I mean by rules is the “traditional” vs “modern” anniversary gift list.  Here is an abbreviated version I found on Wikapedia:

anniversary list

The reason I ask is because my 2nd Anniversary is right around the corner.  I always like to be extra creative with my gifts and after checking the LIST, I knew I was going to have my work cut out for me.

So the Traditional 2nd year gift is Cotton.  I mean who came up with this list? The owners of Bed Bath and Beyond? I was totally stumped.  Cotton?  All that came to mind was clothing, towels, a bath robe?

I was recently at my neighbor Karen’s house and was ooh-ing and aah-ing over a painting of her dogs that her God-Mother Dianne had done for her.  And then it came to me!  I have always wanted to have that kind of painting done of OUR dogs!!  And the big twist was to see if Dianne could use a COTTON canvas! I ran home and called her immediately.  She loved my idea of incorporating the cotton and she said to send on some photos and she would get started!

Here are some of the picture’s I sent to her.  Having never met my boys I thought she would need a few personality shots.

DSC_0335

DSC_0323

DSC_0289

It was SO hard to get the boys side by side in a “cute”pose.  They were totally against it.  But Dianne made it work!

Here is the finished product!

DSC_0390I love how she really captured their personalities!

DSC_0391Boots

DSC_0394Bailey

I was so exicited about how it turned out, I just couldn’t wait until the 13th to give it to Mr.vB.

If any of you are looking to have a portrait done I would HIGHLY recommend Dianne!  Drop me an email and I will send you her contact info!

Green Oak Farm

August 16th, 2009

Mr. vB and I spent another fabulous weekend with good friends at another amazing location!  On Friday afternoon we packed up the car and headed down the road to Providence Fordge, VA.  Destination- GREEN OAK FARM.

This farm has been in my friend Christian’s family since 1687.

Yup- you read that correctly- 1687.

green oak farm sign

This was our 4th Annual Trip to the farm and this year did not disappoint.

Here’s a tour of the farm.

DSC_0137

Here is the main farmhouse. The land was patented to the Christian family around the late 1600′s by the King of England.   And the original structure consisted of just a cellar because Indian’s still inhabited this land. For safety, the Christian’s had to hide below ground. Over time, the family added more rooms and a second floor.  Today the main house consists of a living room, a dining room, a kitchen and four bedrooms.  Many of the door frames in the house are about 6′ tall, where the standard one today is about 7′ tall.  Mr. vB tends to forget about the height difference and has clunked his head on them several times.

DSC_0135Here is the lane that leads up to the farm.  During the Civil War Union soldiers camped out in these fields.  And surprisingly the house survived the war as most homes that the Union came across were burnt to the ground.

DSC_0131Here are some of the original barns that are still being used today.

DSC_0148This structure used to be the farm office and now is the guest cottage.  There are 2 bedrooms that are connected with a bathroom in the middle.

DSC_0107

DSC_0121

And here is the Pool house!

DSC_0117

We love going out to the farm because it it so quiet and relaxing.  We spent most of the day Saturday lounging by the pool reading magazines and napping.  It was awesome!  And we never skimp on the food or drink.  For dinner on Saturday night we changed it up a bit.  We normally eat either in the main house or the pool house, but instead we decided to eat under the stars. We first started with a cocktail hour out under the 200 year old Ginkgo Tree.

DSC_0171

DSC_0184

DSC_0176

DSC_0178

And then we moved around to the front of the house for dinner.

DSC_0194

I felt like we had walked onto a movie set- it was absolutely gorgeous!  And once the sun finally set you could see every star in the sky.  (Us city folk forget how dark in can get out in the country.)

DSC_0201 It would take your eyes just a bit to adjust to the darkness and then you could see.  Unfortunately the camera didn’t adjust so easily.  Here is Mr. vB trying to take a photo without the flash.

DSC_0205 Can you barley see our outlines??

DSC_0207Ah- there we are!

Thanks again Christian for an awesome weekend.  We thoroughly enjoy ourselves every time and can’t wait for next year!

Friends, Mr.vB, Mrs.vB

Fun in the SUN!

August 10th, 2009

I apologize for the lack of posting last week Marty.  After a whirlwind of putting our kitchen “somewhat” back together, both Mr. vB and I were off and running for work.  I spent half of the week out in Western Virginia and Mr. vB was up in DC.  But by Friday we were together again and headed down to Virginia Beach for the DAVE MATTHEWS CONCERT! And the best part was that we were making a weekend of it and staying with our friends, Toni and Mike Eubanks.

Here’s a break down of the weekend:

FRIDAY NIGHT-

What a great show!!

DMB Concert

They played both of my favorite songs, Two Step and Grey Street.  We almost got up close and personal with the band as Mike had a few “connections”.  He gave it his best shot, but all the seats were taken in the orchestra section and we were DENIED.  No worries though- that didn’t stop us from singing and dancing back in the nosebleed area.

This photo was taken after we left the concert and were sitting in front of Chanello’s waiting for our pizza.  Apparently Mr. vB was the only one that was prepared for the photo.  It cracks me up every-time I look at it!

A Classic

SATURDAY MORNING-

We headed down to the Redneck Rivera aka Chick’s Beach for some Cornhole.  Yes that may sound dirty- but it is actually a really fun bean bag toss game.  Toni and Mike are VERY competitive so it was going to be a good game.  Girls vs. Girls as I called it.  And guess who won?  Team TNT..  The boys wanted a re-match, but Toni and I wanted to revel in our win for awhile so we talked them into breaking for lunch.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON-

After lunch we headed to Mike’s parents house for a boat ride.

boat ride

They live in a great house right on the water down at Broad Bay.  Our great hosts’ were originally going to take us out on the Big Ass Boat (not sure how else to describe it- it was huge) but due to a lighting strike the boat lift was out of commission.  That did not stop us though- we just jumped in the Little Ass Boat and we were off.

boat ride 2

Our first stop was to find the group of dolphin that hang out right where the ocean meets the bay.  Those suckers didn’t let us down.  They were everywhere!  Toni said that sometimes you can get them to play with boat and swim beside you, but apparently these dolphin were not interested.  They did get pretty close though…

IMG_0236

Here we thought it we didn’t pay attention to them they might come closer.  It didn’t work but made for some good group shots!

vBs Dolphin Watching II

IMG_0249

After plenty of coaxing by saying “here fishy, fishy” we gave up on them actually getting close enough to touch.  I think I insulted them by calling them fish when they are actually mammals.  OOPS.

Next stop was a boat tour of some of the million dollar homes back in the Bay.  They were all so amazing!!

IMG_0266

IMG_0273

We all agreed that we would drop everything to move into one of these gorgeous homes!

Totty and Dave on the boat

This last house was supposedly inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water House.  This one sure did look like it was going to fall right into the water.  And we can definitely say these people do not own a set of curtains or blinds.  We looked right into their bathroom window from the water and could tell what kind of soap these use.  Good thing that is all we saw!

IMG_0278

By the end of our boat tour, we were all a little sunburned, a little drunk (minus our favorite Captain Mike), and ready for some good seafood!  We capped the fabulous weekend off by a great meal at a local seafood restaurant right on the water.

THANK YOU so much to our fabulous hosts- The Eubanks.  You might have been joking about us moving into the guest room but I think Mr. vB is seriously debating on taking you up on it.  I think you might have also got us hooked on Cornhole, the only problem being that we have no place big enough in our yard to play it.

We look forward to next vB/Eubanks Adventure!!

Mr.vB, Mrs.vB

Have you seen this guy around town??

July 19th, 2009

Mr. vB is riding in style these days..  Check out his new mobile.

DSC_0599

What? Can’t read the logo??  Let me give you a closer look…

DSC_0600

Yes- you read correctly. The peeps at Getloaded.com are going on a road trip this week and Mr.vB is the chauffeur.  They are hitting up several truck stops between here and Ohio to promote their website. Ironically I will be out in Lexington one day when they hit that truck stop.  I told Mr. vB I was going to swing by and say hi.  The look on his face was priceless.

DSC_0602

So if you see this truck out on the highway this week PLEASE honk!!  I have a give away for the first person that tells me that they see him! Write in on the comments and tell me when and where!
